Alice Paul Hall
at Swarthmore College
Swarthmore, PA

In an effort to expand its student housing in a manner that strengthens the incredible natural beauty of its campus, Swarthmore College commissioned our office to conduct a programming and site selection study to determine possible sites for a new residence hall. Based on recommendations from this study, we proceeded with the design for this 150 bed residence hall complex. Intended to create a strong focus at the southern end of Parrish Lawn, Swarthmore’s most iconic open space, the site is defined by two buildings arranged around a three-sided open space. Innovative top floor “duplex” rooms bring a new type of dormitory room that creates a dynamic and unexpected roof line.

Our firm simultaneously performed a land-use study which defined building guidelines and identified campus-wide planning principles that would strengthen the qualities of these special grounds.(Opened Fall 2004. 55,000 sf. Cost withheld at owner’s request)
